Dear Readers,
If you support the unemployed in their quest to find work, then I would like to ask for your help. As many of you are already aware, there are employers out there who refuse to hire the unemployed or those unemployed longer than six months. This is unacceptable, if we are going to move our country forward to better economic times.
I have compiled a list of Craigslist ads from around the country for companies who are not hiring the unemployed. Many of them are blind ads, whereby they won't reveal their name. If you have the background or qualifications they are looking for, I am asking that you contact them to find out who they are.
I do ask that you do not contact them to hassle them, only to find out their company name. We will shame them later, with your help.

I Met an Honorable Man

It's been a while since I've posted anything, so this post is a couple months overdue.
It was the beginning of summer. The usually dark gray skies of Seattle had been replaced with a beautiful blue sky and the sparkling, warm yellow of the morning sun. I had just pulled my car in to a convenience store when I noticed a grizzled, old man get off his motorcycle and walk in the store. He had a long, scraggly beard and a somewhat familiar, yellow armband on his worn, leather jacket. He looked like the epitome of a Hell's Angel. He was an angel, alright. Just not from hell.
His yellow armband kept tugging at the edges of my memory, when a question entered my mind. I waited for him to come out of the store. As he walked out, I approached him with the question, "Excuse me, but are you one of the men who ride to protect military families from the Westboro Baptist Church?"
He replied, "Yes, I am. We're called the Patriot Guard Riders."
"I'd like to shake your hand and thank you for helping them," I said and extended my hand. I watched the expression on his face turn from wariness to the full warmth of a smile.
"As a matter of fact, we're riding today," he stated as he grasped my hand. "To a young man's funeral in Enumclaw. Westboro is supposed to be there, so we will too."
We stood there a few more minutes talking, then he got on his motorcycle and rode off. I was left feeling that it had been an honor to meet this man, however briefly.
If you are unfamiliar with the Westboro Baptist Church, allow me to explain. They are a very small "church" in Kansas. Their congregation consists primarily of their own family members and they are led by a... I hate to call him a man... by the name of Fred Phelps. They are a particularly hateful organization that travel around the country protesting at the funerals of our military men and women. Their signs spew horrific phrases like, "Thank God for Dead Soldiers, God Hates America, God Hates Fags" and other detestable sayings. They will yell this garbage within the hearing range of the families burying their sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters and friends. They have had lawsuits filed against them and by them, all in the name of free speech.
As much as it may make my blood boil, I believe in the right of free speech, no matter how vile it is (however, that free speech stops when calling for the harm of others). But! And this is a damned, big but! In my opinion, our military families also have the right to mourn their lost loved ones in peace and privacy. Period.
But until the WBC is stopped by the courts, the honorable men of the Patriot Guard Riders will continue to ride. They will continue to form a human wall to block the WBC from having to be seen by our military familes. The Patriot Guard will continue to rev their motorcycles to keep our soldiers' families from having to hear the revolting howls of the WBC.
So once again, to my friend that rode to Enumclaw and all of his companions that ride for the same noble reason: Thank you. You are truly honorable men.

Keep Your Politics Away From My Children!

If you are one of those people who stay informed about what's going on in the world, it is easy to get caught up in politics and your personal views. That's all fine and dandy. But when you inject your politics onto children, let's just say you and I are going to have a major problem.
Chicago Sun-Times Columnist Terry Savage thought she was teaching three little girls a life lesson when she and her brother happened on their lemonade stand.
The three young girls -- under the watchful eye of a nanny, sitting on the grass with them -- explained that they had regular lemonade, raspberry lemonade, and small chocolate candy bars.
Then my brother asked how much each item cost.
"Oh, no," they replied in unison, "they're all free!"
I sat in the back seat in shock. Free? My brother questioned them again: "But you have to charge something? What should I pay for a lemonade? I'm really thirsty!"
His fiancee smiled and commented, "Isn't that cute. They have the spirit of giving."
That really set me off, as my regular readers can imagine.
"No!" I exclaimed from the back seat. "That's not the spirit of giving. You can only really give when you give something you own. They're giving away their parents' things -- the lemonade, cups, candy. It's not theirs to give."
I pushed the button to roll down the window and stuck my head out to set them straight.
"You must charge something for the lemonade," I explained. "That's the whole point of a lemonade stand. You figure out your costs -- how much the lemonade costs, and the cups -- and then you charge a little more than what it costs you, so you can make money. Then you can buy more stuff, and make more lemonade, and sell it and make more money."
I was confident I had explained it clearly. Until my brother, breaking the tension, ordered a raspberry lemonade. As they handed it to him, he again asked: "So how much is it?"
And the girls once again replied: "It's free!" And the nanny looked on contentedly.
First of all, Ms. Self-Righteous, Condescending Savage, who the hell are you to tell children what they MUST do with their lemonade stand? They own it. They are free (pardon the pun) to charge what they want or give it away.
Second, they DO own that lemonade stand. Their parents GAVE them the supplies, so don't tell them it was not theirs to give.
What would you say to the physicians with Doctors Without Borders? Or dentists with Operation Smile? Or those who do pro bono work to help those less fortunate than your haughty, sorry ass? Or all those who needed our help (and still do) in Haiti? Sorry poor people, if you want medical care for that rotting, crushed leg or water or food, we're gonna have to charge you for it. That's capitalism. It's the American way.
Ms. Savage was so outraged at three little girls giving away lemonade, she had to rant and rave that this is the reason America is in the current economic situation.
No wonder America is getting it all wrong when it comes to government, and taxes, and policy. We all act as if the "lemonade" or benefits we're "giving away" is free.
And so the voters demand more -- more subsidies for mortgages, more bailouts, more loan modification and longer periods of unemployment benefits.
They're all very nice. But these things aren't free.
The government only gets the money to pay these benefits by raising taxes, meaning taxpayers pay for the "free lemonade." Or by printing money -- which is essentially a tax on savings, since printing more money devalues the wealth we hold in dollars.
If we can't teach our kids the basics of running a lemonade stand, how can we ever teach Congress the basics of economics?
Or maybe it's the other way around: The kids are learning from the society around them. No one has ever taught them there's no free lunch -- and all they see is "free," not the result of hard work, and saving, and scrimping.
If that's what America's children think -- that there's a free lunch waiting -- then our country has larger problems ahead. The Declaration of Independence promised "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." It didn't promise anything free. Something to think about this July 4th holiday weekend.
And that's the Savage Truth!
There you have it, folks. America is screwed up right now because children are giving away lemonade. Actually, the savage truth, Ms. Savage, is that you have no soul and feel the need to push your political views on small children. What the fuck is wrong with you?
